Everyday care for natural stone.

  • Use a soft cloth and a suitable neutral stone cleaner; follow the product’s dilution instructions.
  • Blot spills promptly, rinse away cleaning residue and dry the surface.
  • Use coasters, chopping boards and heat-protective mats or trivets.
  • Keep abrasive powders and unapproved acidic cleaners away from the surface.

The Natural Stone Institute’s care guidance explains these everyday precautions. If your stone supplier provides different instructions for the selected finish, check with them before changing products.

Marble, limestone and other acid-sensitive stones can develop an etch mark when exposed to acidic substances. This is a change to the surface, rather than simply a deposit to scrub away.

SNB Stone’s stone care Q&A discusses acid sensitivity in several natural stone types. Confirm the guidance for your actual slab and finish.

Sealing is specific to the stone and product.

Confirm which sealer was used, where it was applied and the supplier’s care and reapplication guidance. There is no single resealing interval that suits every surface.

Impregnating sealers can improve stain resistance, but they do not make stone stain-proof. Sealing does not prevent acid etching or replace everyday care.

See the Natural Stone Institute’s sealing guidance and keep the instructions for the actual sealer used on your project.

Sinks, vanities & shower stonework.

Remove water and soap residue regularly using products approved for the surface. A suitable squeegee can help minimise soap build-up in wet areas. Rinse and dry after cleaning.

For fabricated stone sinks, keep the bowl and waste area clean using the agreed care products. If you notice an issue at a joint, fixing or connection, send photographs before attempting a repair.

Porcelain, sintered & mineral surfaces.

Use the care guide for the exact brand, collection and finish. A cleaning product recommended for one surface should not be assumed suitable for every stone or manufactured slab.

A stain, dull spot, chip or other concern?

Take a clear photograph of the whole area and a close-up of the issue. Tell us the material, finish, when it appeared and what was on the surface. Include any cleaning products already used.

Avoid experimenting with strong cleaners, abrasives or DIY polishing while the cause is unclear. The appropriate response depends on the material and whether the issue is residue, staining, etching or physical damage.
