Pink Patagonia & Curved Stonework
Natural pattern, sculptural form and a different view of stone through light.

Stone as part of the hospitality experience.
At GPO on Ann Street, natural stone plays several roles: a patterned bar surface, an illuminated backdrop and a sculptural piece of furniture. The project brings those applications into one hospitality interior, with the material doing more than covering a counter.
Pink Patagonia quartzite is the hero selection. Its contrast of pale, blush and darker mineral areas becomes especially expressive when viewed with light behind it. Curved forms and custom edge details give the pattern a three-dimensional presence.
The project is also a useful way to look at craftsmanship at different scales: the complete bar, the backlit feature, the table and the edge junctions that connect individual pieces.

Pink Patagonia quartzite, seen through light.
The butterfly-inspired backlit splashback gives the stone a central role behind the bar. Light passes through the translucent areas and changes the way the mineral pattern is seen, revealing a different character from the same surface under room lighting.
This effect depends on the actual slabs. For a backlit feature, the material selection, visible pattern, thickness, supporting construction and lighting arrangement need to be reviewed together. Lighting and electrical work are coordinated with the relevant project trades.

The installation photograph shows work in progress. Compare it with the finished bar at the top of the article to see how the stone, joinery, lighting and fittings come together.

A sculptural quartzite table.
The custom table gives the quartzite another expression. A deep stone fascia and rounded corners carry the natural pattern around the top, while the fluted pedestal and turned timber support give the piece its distinct profile.

A table like this needs its visible faces and supporting construction considered together. Slab layout, edge assembly, shaping and finishing influence how the pattern reads across the top and down the fascia.

The close-up details matter.
Room photographs establish the overall design. Close views show the decisions within the stonework: the radius of a corner, the depth of an edge and how adjoining faces meet.
Vein matching begins with the available slabs and a proposed layout. Direction, pattern scale and the position of joins are reviewed together; continuity is planned around the natural material, rather than assumed from a small sample.
The original project also includes curved bar detailing with recessed brass inlays. Stone and metal junctions require the fabrication and fit-out details to be coordinated, so the finished surfaces work as one composition.
