Start with how you want to use the space.

A good outdoor kitchen needs room to prepare, cook and serve without everyone gathering around the hotplate. Before choosing the stone, sketch where the BBQ, sink, fridge and seating will sit. Consider the route from the indoor kitchen and where guests will stand while you cook.

Keep a useful preparation area beside the cooking zone and allow room for dishes near the sink. Check door swings, seating, circulation and the view from inside the house. These details help establish the benchtop shape before fabrication begins.

For examples of the stonework we can include, explore our outdoor kitchen and BBQ stonework page.

Choose the surface for the actual outdoor conditions.

A covered alfresco area can still receive afternoon sun and wind-driven rain. Tell us which parts of the benchtop are exposed, how the area drains and how close it is to cooking equipment. Material selection should consider the specific slab or product, its finish and the intended installation.

Natural stone

Selected natural stones can be considered for an outdoor project after the particular stone and finish have been assessed. Review granite benchtops and our natural stone materials guide, then discuss the actual slab, exposure and care requirements with us.

Porcelain and sintered surfaces

An exterior-approved product may be an option where its fabrication and installation requirements suit the design. Cosentino identifies Dekton for outdoor kitchens; the exact product and BBQ installation details still need confirmation. Explore our porcelain and sintered stone page for the next steps.

Ask the supplier to confirm suitability for the intended outdoor use, colour and finish. A material’s appearance alone does not establish its outdoor rating.

Confirm the BBQ before finalising the cut-out.

Choose the exact appliance model early and provide its current installation manual. The cut-out, surrounding surfaces, supports, enclosure and ventilation need to be coordinated with the BBQ specification and the project team.

Heat resistance does not remove the need for the specified installation details. Cosentino’s technical guidance for Dekton around barbecues illustrates why the design around the heat source matters. Follow the guidance for the product and appliance actually selected.

Confirm these details before templating so the stone is manufactured around the agreed appliance arrangement. Gas and electrical connections are completed by the relevant licensed trades.

Give the sink and tapware their own planning space.

A sink can make outdoor preparation and cleaning easier, but it needs room below as well as above the benchtop. Confirm the bowl, waste, tap position and cabinet access with your cabinetmaker and plumber.

Decide how the tap will reach the bowl and where dishes can sit without using the main preparation area. If you are considering a fabricated stone sink, we assess the selected material, basin design and outdoor exposure before confirming the scope.

Explore custom stone sinks and integrated basins. Where included in your quote, NV Stone fits the sink onsite ready for your plumber to connect.

Resolve edges, joins and support together.

Waterfall ends, thicker-looking edges and seating overhangs change the stone layout and support requirements. Discuss them alongside the cabinetry rather than leaving them until the stone is ready to cut.

We review slab dimensions, pattern direction, joins and exposed edges with the proposed layout. A rounded corner or curved island can soften a circulation area, subject to the selected material and fabrication details.

From site template to finished stonework.

1. Confirm the scope and material

Send the plans, project suburb, exposure details and appliance specifications. We review the surfaces, edges, cut-outs and installation work to be included in the quote.

2. Prepare the cabinetry and template onsite

Cabinetry must be installed, level and appropriately supported. Have the relevant appliances, sink and fitting information available so dimensions and fabrication details can be confirmed onsite.

3. Manufacture and hand-finish

NV Stone manufactures the agreed stonework in our Slacks Creek workshop. Cutting, shaping, assembly and edge finishing follow the confirmed slab layout and project details.

4. Install, seal where required and hand over

We coordinate installation, complete sealing where required for the selected material and finish, and provide care guidance. Sink fitting is included where agreed, ready for the plumber’s connections. Read more about our process and craftsmanship.

Questions to settle before you order.

Does an outdoor benchtop need sealing?

It depends on the selected material and finish. Confirm the sealing and care requirements before ordering. Sealing does not make a surface immune to stains or other damage.

Can I put hot cookware directly on the stone?

Use heat protection and follow the selected supplier’s care guidance. BBQ installation requirements and everyday cookware care are separate matters; both need attention.

Can you quote from drawings?

Send plans and elevations with the project location, approximate dimensions, material preferences and appliance models. Tell us about access and site readiness. Final fabrication details are confirmed through the agreed templating process.

Do you build the cabinetry and connect the BBQ?

NV Stone’s quote sets out the stone fabrication and installation scope. We coordinate with your builder, cabinetmaker and relevant trades. Plumbing, gas and electrical connections are carried out by the appropriate licensed trades.
