NV Stone / Planning your project

How Long Does
a Stone Benchtop Take?

Understand the stages from selection to installation—and what needs to be ready at each step.

Explore the sequence · Discuss your project timing

Start the conversation before the cabinets arrive.

The full project timeline includes material selection, site readiness, templating, fabrication and installation. The time between the site template and installation is only one part of that sequence.

For your project, ask NV Stone to confirm the programme against the selected material, fabrication scope, current production availability and site readiness. A simple run, a curved island with a custom basin and a staged commercial fit-out require different planning.

Send drawings and your preferred timing early. Explore our process and craftsmanship page for the complete service.

1. Confirm the stone and the fabrication scope.

Choose the exact material, finish and slabs where applicable. Confirm availability and the agreed supply or reservation arrangements rather than assuming a sample means the material has been secured.

Resolve the benchtops, splashbacks, waterfall ends, edges, fascia, curves and sink details in the quote and drawings. Provide the actual appliance, sink and tapware specifications, including any additional holes or cut-outs.

Use our materials guide and stone benchtop cost guide to help define the scope.

2. Have the site ready for templating.

The site template confirms the dimensions and fabrication details against the installed cabinetry. Cabinetry needs to be installed, level and appropriately supported, with the relevant appliances, sinks and fitting information available.

  • Confirm that the cabinetry and support arrangements are ready.
  • Have the required fittings onsite and specification sheets available.
  • Resolve edge profiles, joins, cut-outs and any curved details.
  • Tell us about pending cabinet changes or adjoining finishes.
  • Confirm access and who will be available to settle project details.

Contact NV Stone before the appointment if the site programme changes. Templating against an unfinished or changing layout can require a return visit or revised fabrication information.

See the kitchen renovation checklist for more preparation details.

3. Confirm the layout before manufacture.

Site dimensions need to be brought together with the selected slabs and design details. Pattern direction, joints, waterfall returns and cut-out positions are considered as part of that layout.

Changes to a sink, cooktop, fascia or cabinet arrangement can affect more than one piece of stone. Raise changes before manufacture and ask how they affect the scope and programme.

4. Allow for cutting, assembly and hand finishing.

NV Stone manufactures the agreed stonework in our Slacks Creek workshop. Depending on the design, the work includes cutting, shaping, assembling components, finishing exposed edges and checking the completed pieces.

Curved profiles, deep fascias, matched panels and fabricated basins introduce additional stages. The selected material and the specific construction details are considered when planning that work.

For examples of the detail involved, explore curved stonework and custom stone sinks and integrated basins.

5. Coordinate installation and the following trades.

Confirm that the site remains ready for the agreed installation date. Advise us about parking, loading access, lifts, stairs, narrow entries and any delivery booking or working-hour restrictions.

We install the quoted stonework and complete sealing where required for the selected material and finish. Where included in the agreed scope, sinks are fitted onsite ready for the plumber to connect.

Coordinate plumbing, electrical work and other finishing trades with the project team. Ask when the installed surfaces can be used and follow the handover guidance for the particular materials and installation products.

What can change the programme?

Material availability, unresolved selections, cabinet changes, missing fittings, access restrictions and additional stonework can all affect scheduling. A staged project also needs an agreed sequence for each area.

The most useful step is to keep the drawings, quote and site programme aligned. Tell us promptly when something changes so the effect on templating, fabrication and installation can be assessed.

Questions about timing.

Does the timeline start when I first enquire?

Initial planning and material selection come before site templating and fabrication. Ask for the project programme to distinguish those stages and identify what must be confirmed before production can proceed.

Can you template before the cabinetry is installed?

Our site template is coordinated with installed, level and appropriately supported cabinetry. Drawings can be reviewed earlier for quoting and planning, but they do not replace the agreed final site templating process.

Will a custom basin or curved island affect the timing?

Those details can introduce additional fabrication and finishing stages. Provide the design and material early so the scope and programme can be assessed together.

When should I book the plumber?

Coordinate the booking around the confirmed installation programme and the readiness of the sink and fittings. Check with the project team before fixing follow-on trade dates.
